Ramapo River Environmental Impact StudyOrange Co Env. Facilities and Services
Orange County, NY
Bagdon Environmental conducted an aquatic study of a 17-mile stretch of the Ramapo River in Orange and Rockland Counties, New York as part of an EIS for expansion of the regional wastewater treatment facility. The study was conducted to document existing biological conditions of the river, determine pollution sources and assess potential impacts of the facility expansion project. Recommendations were formulated at the conclusion of the study to improve the water quality and aquatic habitat of the river.
This study entailed a biotic survey of fish, macroinvertebrates, water quality and sediment analysis. Backpack-mounted electro-shocking units were used to sample and record fish species and pertinent data at five stations within the study area. Macroinvertebrates were sampled at ten stations using standardized kick-sampling methods and analyzed using the NYSDEC protocol for Rapid Biological Assessment of Streams. Badgon Environmental conducted a site reconnaissance of significant aquatic habitat features concurrently with the biotic surveys.
